Winter walks

Despite the dull and grey weather, Bine and I still regularly go out on the weekends and go for a walk somewhere. We usually go look for the sun on the Croatian coast, but if it doesn’t shine there either, we try to find it higher up in Slovenia. That doesn’t always work, but often, it does.

Two weeks ago, we drove to the mountain Krim, where you can drive to the top if you want. However, we parked the car about three kilometers before the top, along the road and walked from there. Unfortunately, I had a bad cold and wasn’t feeling very well, but we got there anyway. And thank goodness! Exactly in the hour that we walked there, the sun was shining and we were treated to a beautiful view over the sea of clouds and the high peaks of the Alps in the distance.

The Krim is 1107 meters high and at the top there is, of course, a mountain hut where you can eat and drink. We had Ivy with us but unfortunately, she wasn’t allowed inside. Bine got tea (with a dash of rum) and we drank it in the hallway because it was very cold and windy outside. Usually, they don’t make a fuss about a dog going inside, certainly not ours since it is a quiet and small animal. But sometimes they really don’t want it and then we just stick to that.

Last Sunday we drove to Gospodična, a lower hut above Novo mesto, where we parked the car and then went for a walk to the next hut, called Dom na Miklavžu. A very nice route where it is really beautiful in the spring, when everything is green again. You can also walk a whole route around here or walk further up to the television tower on Trdinov Vrh. That is on the border with Croatia. We walked there years ago with my parents, Lexi and her niece Tamara. The sign on the picture says ‘Warning, country border’.

After we had a look at the church next to the hut, we had a nice meal in the hut ‘Dom na Miklavžu’. Fortunately, Ivy was allowed in here without any problems.

The sun also came out during this walk. What was a shame though, was that a few times along the way, a number of dirt bikes came racing past us, making an enormous noise. They should ban that as far as I’m concerned. The wildlife in the woods must be scared to death! The dirt road was also quite muddy here and there because of the melted snow, but we had good shoes on so that wasn’t a big problem.

Of course, Ivy didn’t look all that good when we got back to the car, but luckily, we had a towel with us for her and we have a special dog blanket on the back seat of the car. All in all, it was a lovely afternoon.
